When I was first diagnosed with cancer, I was advised by almost everyone to eat whatever I could whenever I could. The thought behind this was that nausea would be setting in and I needed calories to survive (regardless of what the calories were made of) lest I waste away.  So I stocked up on sugary snacks…

Wiser folks at the time mentioned that cancer feeds on sugar and there are anti-cancer super foods, etc but none of the doctors I was paying for my care we’re pushing it. They were just happy I wasn’t rapidly losing weight.

Thankfully, a coworker turned me on to an integrative medicine naturopath who’s a cancer survivor who works helping others through their treatment. Science shows that what you eat before, during, and after your treatment has a big impact on your results: Will you get cancer? Will the chemo work? Will the cancer come back?

While chemo tries to poison the cancer out of my system, my naturopath tries to build up the other parts of me so that they are strong enough to support the treatments. The best thing is it works!

I start my day with a healthy smoothie now and have mostly changed my diet.

The first half of my chemo treatments had pretty terrible side effects when I was on comfort foods and sugar.  The second half have gone much more smoothly now that I’m eating right.  I have no doubt I’d be in much worse shape had I not made this discovery.
