I’m trying to get into a routine now that I’m home. I have a bunch of physical therapy exercises, stretches, and balance work to do. In addition, I’m trying to walk further and take more stairs each day to build up my strength.
Part of my routine is to include a daily trip outside the house so I don’t go stir crazy. Yesterday I was able to go out for a sandwich with my wife for lunch. This morning was “Doughnuts with Dad” day at my daughter’s school. I was incredibly excited this morning when I woke up and felt strong enough to go. I can’t drive so Jennifer still had to drop us off but it was awesome to be able to participate in a school event again.
I got many looks of relief from the faces of the teachers and moms who know my story and were surprised to see me walk into the cafeteria with my daughter today.
It’s these signs that life is starting to get back to normal that keep me working hard on all of my exercises. The chemo kept me fatigued for a couple of days but that seems to have subsided now and I’m back to feeling pretty good.
Having gone through this experience, I’m more thankful now for the simple things I once took for granted (like a doughnut with my daughter at her school).
