I promised to share some excerpts from my book here to get you excited about getting your hands on a copy.  Here’s the next installment in that series I’ll title “Managing a Day Job and a Dream Job.”  I hope you enjoy it!

If you are thinking about doing something like this yourself, read Jon Acuff’s book Quitter.  You won’t regret it.

The three most important things I learned from Jon that applied directly to what I was doing when I was going through it were:

1)       Don’t steal from your day job

Without knowing it, I was stealing from my day job.  I’d find myself daydreaming about my side business, answering emails, planning and scheming, or using social media on company time.  It started out innocent enough and turned into something I wouldn’t want an employee of mine doing on my dime.  The funny thing is that when I stopped, I actually became more productive at both my day and dream jobs.  My time was more focused.

 2)      Be Selfish at 5am

Many people have asked when I would have time to work on this with a young family and a demanding day job.  5am is the time.  I love Jon’s quote “Is it really a dream if you’re not willing to get up at 6am to work on it?”  I’ve been getting up, with few exceptions, at 5 or 5:30am to work on this business for over a year now.

 3)       Hustle

If the Kickstarter experience wasn’t enough to get my hustle on, Jon’s words of inspiration were.  You have to hustle to make it happen.  There is no substitute.

Jon is coming out with a new book this spring called START.  From everything I’ve seen so far, it looks just as inspirational as QUITTER was for me.  I highly recommend Jon’s work.
