I promised to share some excerpts from my book here to get you excited about getting your hands on a copy. Here’s the first in that series I’ll title “The Making of a Dream.” I hope you enjoy it!
The first memory I have of my passion for wooden boats is probably reading the Hardy Boys books growing up. The adventures of this crime fighting duo hopping into their wooden runabout from their family’s boathouse was fascinating to me and set the hook in what would turn into a lifelong interest in classic wooden boats. Fast forward 25 years and that same Hardy Boys-like excitement still exists for me every time I get into my boat.
Beyond the sheer excitement I feel on the boat itself, I also come from a family of woodworkers and handymen. The prospect of building or maintaining my own wooden boat is one I have had for a long time. My grandfather built several wooden boats. My dad is a woodworker and has an extensive wood shop. In high school I even bought plans and started construction of my own wooden boat, a cedar kayak. That unfinished boat still hangs in my parent’s garage to this day.
Wooden boats, the kind you want anyway, come with a hefty price tag and a lot of work. I took some intermediate steps before I was able to realize my plan to be the proud owner of one.
